Founded in 1883, The University of Texas at Austin, is known as one of the largest and most respected universities in the nation. They like to think of themselves as a university with Texas traditions and world talent. UT is proud to have students from every state and more than hundred countries and likes to refers to themselves as a diverse learning community. The University of Texas at Austin's official alma mater, "The Eyes of Texas", was written by John Sinclair in 1903.
The University's most recognizable landmark and symbol is known as, 'The Tower", and was completed in 1937. The Tower can be seen from almost any location in Austin standing at 307 feet and 27 stories. The University of Texas at Austin's mascot is a Texas longhorn named, Bevo. Bevo has been the university mascot since 1916. Another long time tradition is the "Hook 'em Horns" hand sign, created in 1955 and recognized worldwide. The University of Texas also has one of the nation's most recognized and celebrated marching bands, the Longhorn Band, often referred to as "The Showband of the Southwest". The band is an ambassador for the university and the state, performing for U.S. presidents, at Super Bowls and National Football League games, in addition to performing at their own athletic events.
