Texas A&M is among the nation's largest universities. The campus is over 5,200 acres with a student body of over 50,000, including 9,000+ graduate students and is the state's first public institution of higher education. In the 1960's, under the presidency of Gen. James Earl Rudder, Texas A&M underwent many changes. It was under his tenure that the college diversified and began admitting minorities and women. Texas state legislature renamed the school to Texas A&M University in 1963, with the "A" and "M" no longer standing for Agricultural and Mechanical but rather just a symbolic link to the school's past. Since that time Texas A&M has flourished and has become one of the nation's premier research universities. It is one of the only three Tier 1 universities in Texas, along with University of Texas and Rice.
In 1997 on the West Campus, the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, making Texas A&M one of only a few universities to host a presidential library on their campus. President Bush still maintains an active role in the university, hosting and participating in special events held throughout the Library.
There are countless activities for the students ranging from athletics and recreation to professional and community service events. Students have access to an award winning faculty and world class research programs. Texas A&M is the proud winners of 46 Big 12 titles in various women's and men's sports, with a record nine trophies in 2010-2011, the most in the Big 12!
