UT Knoxville was founded in 1794 in Knoxville Tennessee and was originally known as Blount College, then in 1807 became East Tennessee College, to East Tennessee University in 1840, and then finally was changed to University of Tennessee in 1879. Battelle of the nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory is a co-manager to the university. The Department of Energy's largest science and energy lab offers faculty and students unparalleled research and learning opportunities.
