Formal wear sizing

Your jean size is not your dress size: All too often women assume that their pant size will dictate their gowns’ size. With designer collections come varying fabrics and cuts. Often you will be going up in size, but again we stress that measuring yourself (and ordering by individual designers’ size charts) is the only way to ensure the fit.

Don’t Fib: Every woman has some dislike with herself, whether a curve is too small or too big. But to make sure your gown fits the best it can you have to be honest with what the measuring tape says. It is better for your dress to fit you to a T, than to try to fit in an improper size. No one will know what your tag reads but you and will only wonder if it is ill fitting. Now you’re ready to get started:

Step 1: Bust - Place the measuring tape flat over the fullest part of your bust. Have your helper bring the tape around to the center of your back. Make sure that the tape is snug but not tight. Record your measurement.

Step 2: Waist - Again, place the measuring tape flat against your stomach at the smallest part of your mid section. Wrap the tape around the back, have your helper again pull it to fit your body. Record Your Measurement.

Step 3: Hips - Place the measuring tape at your side around the largest part of your hip and thigh area. Hand your assistant the end of the tapes and have her ensure that the measuring tape includes the hip, thigh, and butt in the curviest measurement here. Again pull the tape snug and record the measurement.

Once you’ve got all your measurements recorded, pull up the size chart for the specific dress and designer you’re interested in. Compare your measurements with the chart and plot what size you fall into for each category: bust, waist, and hip. The largest size that applies is the one you should ultimately order. When in doubt go up a size, and if you need help, call us! When measured and ordered properly, your gown is sure to fit as it should. You will look and feel Fabulous!

Length: Full length formal dresses are approximately 58 inches.

Alterations: Ultimately these gowns are not custom made so you will need to find a qualified seamstress or alterations person in your area that can work with delicate fabrics and beading on formal, pageant and bridal gowns.
